My First Needlestick
Written @ 10:32 p.m. on 2004-01-27

So it had to happen sooner or later. In my case it happened as soon as humanly possible. On my second subcutaneous heparin injection I stuck a clean needle into my thumb trying to take the cap off. It wasn't that bad and I put a bandaid on it. But afterwards it really freaked me out. I've worked fo a while now with HIV/AIDS and sticking myself happened in a millisecond. It was so fast. And I want to work with AIDS patients. It just made me think about how easy it is for things to go wrong. On the upside I'm the first nursing student in my clinical group to get to do injections.

I've also had crazy other stuff happen in the last two days. Here's the list.

-2 walks in -40 weather

-car is frozen solid

-melted two sets of jumper cables trying to start said frozen car

-2 fire alarms (false alarms) in my building in one night

-1 broken glass in a sink full of clean dishes

-1 favorite pen broken

- carpool friend's car broke down on the Whitemud

-forgot my wallet so I got a pity cup of coffee at Earls (that was actually a nice thing)

So yeah it's been an interesting time for me the last few days but that's ok. I'm doing really well in clinical - hence the fact I was the only one thus far that's gotten to do injections. And I'm less freaked out about it now. I'm a good nurse...I am...and people like me!...( I hope)...I have good self-esteem don't worry.
