An Unexpected Bond
Written @ 1:08 a.m. on 2004-04-23

So I spent the evening with Voyageur, my buddy from up North where I guide canoe trips. I wasn't sure what to expect when he called me up and we arranged a time to see each other. Voyageur is not a big talker in my experience. Sometimes we can get into some good conversations but he is normally pretty quiet.

But Voyageur has met a girl. Tee hee. And now he's become all romantic which is immensely humourous to watch. He told me all about how they got together and then their first date where he traveled to England where she is living and they went to Italy for two weeks (how to top THAT first date!) So my red meat-eating, gun-toting, right-winged red neck (his description went to ITALY for a girl. This is very exciting.

So he told me all about his trip and what they did and what things were like there and it was wonderful for me to hear about how he's doing and how happy he is about this girl (who I get to meet this summer).

Another reason I love Voyageur is because he always makes me feel like I'm as cool as he is. Don't get me wrong he's not all "Look at me, I'm the man". But he's a good paddler and a good guy and he doesnt give undue credit to ANYONE and he includes me in his idea of good paddlers and good guides and that makes me happy.

He's SOOOOOOOO different from me (SOOOO different) but somehow we manage to get along and like spending time together and I really appreciate our friendship. It was really nice to see him tonight and I can't wait to paddle with him in a couple of weeks.
